2009 Pinot Gris $15.99 149526
Composition: 100% estate grown Pinot Gris
With this varietal’s ability to ripen and drop its acidity in a small period of time, Pinot Gris one of the most suited varietals for viticulture on the Gulf Islands. Saturna Island’s climate is ideal for growing Pinot Gris and the short, mild summers are portrayed gracefully in the olfactory properties of this wine. The grapes were harvested at 21.5 degrees brix and put through a slow and cold fermentation for two weeks. The results are a full and rich wine that was born to be bottled. The juice was racked and returned to the vat three times and then filtered for absolute clarity. Every drop of wine in this bottle comes from our premium vines on our Longfield Vineyard.
On the nose: Apricots and guavas aromas are predominant with flinty rock and minerality.
On the palate: Full, rounded and oozing fruit flavors of apricot, apple and mango. This wine is bone dry, but full with a bright acidity and lengthy finish.
2009 Rose $15.99 149518
Composition: 100% estate grown Pinot noir
Introducing Saturna Island Vineyards very first estate rose. Given 24 hours of skin contact, during which time it was worked ever so softly to achieve the required extraction and inoculated with one of the strongest ester producing yeast cultures. The optimum maturity of fruit obtained in 2009 resulted in this stellar rose, Saturna Island Family Estate Vineyards newest member of the family, and a formidable one at that.
On the nose: Raspberries and strawberries reflect its Pinot noir origins and inform or remind one of the diversity of this extraordinary cultivar. Cherries and peaches are noted by the most distinguished of noses.
On the palate: The wine shows its full colours and hides nothing. Strawberries are most notable and every sip leaves you wanting more of this fruit bonanza. It’s sexy, luscious and even appeals to the masculine side of the human race. Go on guys...try drinking something pink (or perhaps salmon coloured if your testosterone stands in the way).
2009 un-Oaked Chardonnay$14.99 149575
Composition: 100% estate produced Chardonnay
Holding back on the quantity of fruit produced and insuring optimal ripeness within each berry, was the viticulturist’s primary objective for this block during the 2009 growing season. Harvesting occurred mid-October at a Brix reading of 20.5, and the grapes were immediately taken into the winery, destemmed, pressed and settled on that same day to ensure minimal loss of natural fruit flavors. The juice was then cold fermented for a week and racked and returned three times to reach optimal clarity.
On the nose: Aromas of lemon and lime cordial with a refreshing presence of pineapple, create a trio sub tropical fruit choir performing for your nose.
On the palate: With a crisp sly acidity the 2009 Chardonnay at first tiptoes into your mouth, and then settles to reveal the fruit it carries so well. The pineapple, pears and the citrus that flashed at your nose is well received on the palate. It makes for an excellent summer wine.
2009 Gewurztraminer $17.99 149567
Composition: 100% estate grown Gewurztraminer
Gewurztraminer being the conservative producer of fruit that, makes up for what it lacks in volume in varietal characteristics. Producing only 59 cases (530 liters) in 2009 this wine is a rarity. Harvested late October and given 12 hours of skin contact to extract the most tropical of grape phenols, the grapes were then pressed, slightly oxygenated and fermented to dryness in a week’s time.
On the nose: Lychees, mangoes and papayas all climb, fall and stumble over one another to reach the rim of the glass. In the midst of all this anarchy a rose petal perfume lingers. Hold on to this wine for a couple of months, it’s only going to get better.
On the palate: Not what the sweet seeker expected but will most certainly appeal to dry white wine lovers of all sorts. Its fresh acidity and notable spice on the palate portrays what a Gewurztraminer in cool climates can achieve.
2009 Blanc de noir $14.99 432633
Composition: 100 % estate grown Merlot fruit.
Our estate grown Merlot based Blanc de noir, is true to our vineyard and truly a unique creation. Fruit was destemmed, left on the skins for only two hours, pressed and then prepared as a white wine (fermented cool and reductive).
On the nose: Aromas of red ripe figs, rich red peppers and pomegranate dominate its flavor profile and dare the adventurists to identify them.
On the palate: The richness and fullness of its nose is carried over onto the palate and its charms of Jalapeño jelly is to the lover of spicy things a quaffable number indeed.
2009 Sparkling $19.99 149591
Composition: 90% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Gris
Made from only our finest Chardonnay fruit grown in ideal conditions in Saturna Island Family Estate Winery’s Robyn's Vineyard, we are proud to introduce our very first estate produced Sparkling wine. The fruit was handpicked and slow pressed for three hours prior to its cold fermentation which was completed in a stainless steel vat, after a week and half post inoculation. Divided into two fractions during the press cycles (press and free run) and kept separately at first and then blended back to create a base wine suited for the style we intended.
Pinot Gris produced from our pedigree block (Longfield Vineyard) was also blended into the base wine to add complexity and lend it the fruit characters observed in this wine, particularly those of fresh picked pears.
The secondary fermentation occurred within the bottle and lasted another month. Each bottle was disgorged and topped up manually, so the bottle you buy it in is the fermentation vat that it was made in.
